Facial Trauma

Facial trauma often occurs suddenly and varies in severity. Your oral surgeon can treat facial injuries of all kinds, from lacerations on the skin to bone fractures, restoring health and aesthetics.

An oral surgeon may be required when an injury has been sustained to the mouth, jaw, teeth, or face. Experienced oral surgeons like Dr. Nedbalski, Dr. Chai, and Dr. Luter have a specialized understanding of the facial structures and how to administer the right surgical treatment to restore balance to the face, minimize scarring, and promote optimal healing.

We understand that injuries can happen at any time. If you or your child has sustained a facial trauma, please contact Boulder Oral Surgery as soon as possible for prompt evaluation and treatment. However, any injuries that occur outside usual business hours or are severe should be treated at the nearest emergency room by the oral surgeon on call.

Treating Facial Injuries

Facial trauma injuries may include cuts to the face or mouth, broken or knocked-out teeth, or broken facial or jaw bones. Dr. Nedbalski, Dr. Chai, or Dr. Luter will make every effort to see you as soon as possible after a facial trauma injury. The type of treatment you will receive is dependent upon the location and severity of the injury. In general, treatments of facial trauma injuries are as follows.

Facial Cuts

Cuts that have occurred inside or around the mouth are commonly treated with stitches. The best suturing technique will be determined and utilized to promote healing and minimize scarring.

Facial Fractures

Facial fractures are different from broken bones that are sustained elsewhere in the body because they cannot be set with traditional casts. Instead, your oral surgeon will use wires, plates, and screws to set the bones in place.

Dental Injuries

Many times, a broken or cracked tooth can be treated by a dentist. However, if the tooth has been knocked-out or broken at the socket, an oral surgeon may be required. Please call Boulder Oral Surgery if your tooth has been knocked out. Treatment within the first 30 minutes of a severe dental injury offers the best chance for saving a tooth. Please bring the tooth with you to our practice in a container of saliva or whole milk. Do not wipe off or clean the tooth.

In the instance where a natural tooth cannot be saved after an injury, your oral surgeon will discuss your options for tooth replacement, including dental implants.
